The Covid-19 (Corona Virus) outbreak has affected everyone and has brought many day-to-day operations to a standstill. Since then, the popularity of Google Classroom, a service that offers online learning tools via the web and app, has skyrocketed as many schools and universities have closed. It is currently the most downloaded education app on the play store.
Google Classroom is a free platform designed by google that allows teachers and students to communicate. It can be used to organize and manage work easily. This service which was launched on the web in 2014, soon followed with a mobile which combines Google Drive, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, along with Gmail and Google Calendar to allow teachers procure lessons to students. Below we look at the benefits of using Classroom.
Benefits of Google Classroom
Google Classroom can easily be accessed from any computer or mobile device with internet connectivity. Files uploaded by teachers and students are stored in a ‘Classroom Folder’ on Google Drive. Since users must login with an email created with their learning institution’s domain, they automatically receive an unlimited amount of storage space.
Classroom offers a number of ways for students to work together. Teachers can use features to facilitate online discussions between students or assign group projects within the app. Students are also able to work on the same Google Docs shared by the teacher.
A crucial component of learning involves providing meaningful feedback to students. The grading tool in Classroom allows teachers to mark submitted assignments and include comments. The mobile app also provides the option for users to annotate work.
Teachers are able to design lessons based on individual learning styles and assign tasks individually or to groups. It may be argued that this could be better achieved on Classroom than in the actual classroom.
Google Classroom makes it easy for teachers to analyze data from assessments to ensure students are achieving learning objectives. This data can be exported into Google Sheets for sorting and analysis.
All in all, Google Classroom is a free platform that allows students and teachers to communicate and engage active learning. Its ease of use makes it a perfect for the social distancing limitation imposed in response to the current pandemic.
